how safe is booking through the internet?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2008 and filed under england paris vacation |

I am planning a vacation to europe but i am a bit apprehensive about booking online . what if the hotel I book does not even exist and just has a fake site to get money.
can anyone recomend affordable (really affordable ) hotel that you know are genuine.
I need hotels in these three locations.
1. paris ,France
2. Cherbourg , France
3. London , England
Thanks a lot everyone

book through expedia, they are great and a tip always look for a gold lock on the link bar, you should also have your phishing protection on, this detects known sites that are dodgy!

but yer you are perfectly safe to book online through expedia and they are very cheap on deals. ive just booked my hol through them going to las vegas :)

you usually see a gold lock when putting in your credit card details, this means your info is encrypted, so know one can read that information.

I always book through the internet and I have never had any problems. just go through a reputable site and make sure there is a phone number answered by real people in case you have a question.

I think you can book when you'll get there…just make a research to have an idea where to go and about fees then you'll find places without booking…you can try to get only a reservation

Go to reputable (ABTA bonded etc) UK Travel Agency, if you really want to book independently, get some brochures and track down the hotels that the brochures promote, (on the Internet) and book directly, don't be afraid to haggle over the price.

If you book with credit cards you're protected to a certain extent, (check card provider).
    Also check,
..traveler recommendations on BBS boards etc.
    ..lonely planet/rough guide websites.
..large travel sites like lastminute.com, you can find reviews and contact details for bonafide hotels.

If you book directly with a hotel on the internet, then I guess there is a chance that it is a fake site to get money - unless it is a well known hotel, or a member of a chain of hotels.

When you find the hotel that you like the look of, you could search for it on a hotel review web site ( e.g. http://www.tripadvisor.com) to see what sort of reviews it gets, and also get some extra confirmation that it is a valid hotel.

You could use an online travel-agent to book your hotel like http://www.expedia.com. That way you know that the hotel exists and if you have any problems you have a known travel-agent who are responsible for helping to resolve your problems. You don't pay any more for booking your room this way.

For an affordable hotel in London you should look at http://www.travelodge.co.uk . This is a chain of hotels, with hotels all over central London. If you book far enough in advance you can get rooms for as little as £19 per night for a double room. The rooms are clean and modern, but there are no frills (like shower gel).

Paris: http://www.homemoderne.com/ - affordable and genuine.

I also like to look for places to stay at http://www.hostelworld.com - when you book with hostelworld, you only pay a small booking fee. The total is due at the hostel/hotel/B&B itself, so first you can always say "thanks, but no thanks" when it turns out to be a dump and second you cannot loose a large amount of money booking online.
But more often than not I use hostelworld to find hostels in a city, then I look for the telephone number or email adress of the hostel and contact them to tell them that I am coming. I do not pay anything at all until I get there.
