I’m planning on taking a trip to London and Paris once I turn 19. I plan to fly to London and stay there for five days, and then fly to Paris and stay there for five days as well. A 10 day vacation. I’m not incredibly picky about hotels, although I would like to be comfortable. I’m hoping that an experienced traveller might know a close estimate of the total cost, including airfare, hotel, food, and extra money for touristy things (the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, etc.) and shopping.
That depends on a lot of things including the ever changing exchange rate for pounds and euros.
I just planned that exact trip, with Belgium and Scotland also. The airfare from west coast US to Heathrow was around 800. If you are in NYC you can find really cheap flights, say 200 sometimes, usually last minute though.
Flying from London to Paris was around 100 (one way). But if you know a couple of months ahead of time you can get a train ticket through the chunnel for less. If you wait to a few weeks before you leave the trains may be booked and more expensive then flying.
Hotels range as much as they do in NYC or San Fran anywhere from 50-600 or more. If you do your research you can find a decent hotel in a good location for around 100 a night (dollars). Which isn’t bad, considering most hotels like Marriott’s and Hilton’s in the States are over that.
Tourist attractions have their current ticket rates listed. Most Museums are going to be comparable to the ones in the states for admission.
Try some sites that cater more toward Europe then the usual US travel sites.
Planetware has some great guides to European cities.
Easyjet has cheap airfare in between European cities.
City Discovery has some cool tours out of the major cities if you don’t plan on renting a car. (like Stonehenge from London)
Skoosh has some great hotel deals in Europe.
Qype is the Yelp of the UK. Reviews by locals.
Have a great trip. And take advantage of the student discounts across Europe for everything if you are under 25.
