Going to Washington, DC on vacation?

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2008 and filed under london paris vacation |

Would anyone recommend renting a car if staying in Silver Springs, Arlington or suburb areas?
How is marking at the monuments or traffic?
I have driven in London, and Paris and it wasn't that bad. Any suggestions?

I'd use the METRO…that's what I do when I go there. You can always rent a car for just one day if you want to see things outside of the heart of the major DC area. But the METRO is the way to go…throw in a taxi here or there. Because, remember, you need to PARK that car someplace…and places are scarce and costly.

Well a car would make it much more convenient to go and do things outside of the city. It depends on how long you are going to be there. If you are only going for a few days you could spend the whole time in the city seeing monuments and museums and wouldn't need or want a car. It is expensive to park in the city. And not worth the drive normally. Traffic and craziness isn't as bad as some people think or say. Not as bad as driving in london or paris. I loved DC. Lived there for 4 years and loved every minute! Best place i've ever lived! Enjoy!

I was in DC a few years ago, and don't recommend renting a car. Traffic didn't seem to bad, and DC is a well engineered city, but the subway is a great, cheap way to get around. I stayed in Arlington a few blocks away from a subway station and could go to any of the main DC landmarks within a few minutes time without worrying about parking or traffic at all.

The subway in DC takes you everywhere including arlington, and all the tourist spots. Hotels down town are $250+ expensive - at least the one we stayed at was…so out side may be less expensive.

Skip the car. The subway goes just about anywhere you want. You'll spend more time at the sights, rather than in the car.
